Office Remodeling

In one research study, anxious patients in a dental clinic were measurably less nervous on days when a "large nature mural" showing a leafy scene decorated the waiting room than on days when the wall was blank.

The remodeling of this office building, and its surrounding grounds, afforded the opportunity to create and enhance the experience of approach, entry, and waiting for visitors.

New stone-walled entry gardens create a sense of passage from the street and parking. They slow the visitor, encouraging a pause to appreciate the plantings. The glass walls in the offices and waiting areas look out on plantings, butterflies and birds.

On the Covered Walkway, existing canvas shade panels were aged and confining. The new metal trellis shade structure directs the eye up and out and seems to float over the roof. Metal louvers over wide windows allow expansive views while cutting the harsh sun.

Biophilic design principles connect the visitors and employees with the healing and restorative effects of nature. Water fountains give a calming babble. Trees provide shade and color. Accent plants add constantly changing interest through the seasons. Worn wood ceilings and natural stone materials add natural warmth and texture and richness of detail.
